Almost anybody who has lost teeth or needs to replace old dentures will be a suitable candidate for removable dentures. Most people who are not good candidates for other tooth-replacement options can enjoy dentures .In many cases, dentures also provide a cost-effective solution, especially for people who need many or all of their teeth replaced.
Different types of Dentures
- Full dentures: Sometimes called complete dentures, these removable sets mimic the appearance of healthy teeth and gums and replace all of your teeth.
- Partial dentures: If you have some healthy teeth, partial dentures can replace only the missing ones and fit over your healthy teeth.
- Overdentures: Like partial dentures, these work when you still have some healthy teeth. They’re fitted to dental implants, giving them additional stability.
- Immediate dentures: Your mouth may need to heal before we can fit you with permanent dentures. Our dentist can fit you with immediate dentures at the same time your teeth are removed so you won’t leave the dental office with missing teeth.
We will give you instructions for caring for your mouth and immediate dentures during the healing process. Once you take your permanent set of removable dentures home, you will need to clean them daily. Just as with natural teeth, tartar and plaque can build up. We will suggest products and manual processes to follow to keep your dentures clean. It’s also important to remove this kind of denture each night to give your gums a chance to heal.
Frequently Asked Questions about Dentures Treatment
Dentures are custom-made, removable dental appliances that replace missing teeth and surrounding oral tissues, providing a natural-looking and comfortable solution for those with tooth loss.
There are two main types of dentures: complete dentures, which replace all the teeth in a jaw, and partial dentures, which replace one or more missing teeth.
Dentures are made by taking impressions of your mouth and creating a model of your jaw. A dental lab uses this model to craft the dentures to fit your mouth comfortably and naturally.
With proper care and maintenance, dentures can last for several years. However, they may need to be relined, remade, or rebased due to normal wear or changes in your mouth over time.
Clean your dentures daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a non-abrasive denture cleanser. Remove them at night to allow your gums to rest, and soak them in water or a denture solution to keep them moist.
There may be a brief adjustment period while you get used to speaking with dentures. Practicing speaking aloud and reading out loud can help you adapt more quickly.
Initially, you may need to make some adjustments to your eating habits, such as cutting food into smaller pieces and chewing slowly. As you become more accustomed to your dentures, you'll be able to enjoy most of your favorite foods again.
Regular dental checkups are essential for maintaining your oral health and ensuring your dentures continue to fit properly. Your dentist will recommend an appropriate schedule based on your individual needs.
