Dental Implants: Replacing Teeth Permanently
A dental implant is a tooth-like replacement that is firmly placed in your mouth by attaching it to a metal post implanted in your jawbone. It can replace a single tooth or an entire row of teeth and, unlike dentures, it’s a fixed, permanent solution.
Dental Implants requires of various steps
Consultation
At your initial appointment, we will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of your teeth and mouth to determine whether you are a good candidate for dental implants, or if another treatment method would work better for you. We will explain the treatment, the timeline, the recovery process, and answer any questions you have.
Bonegraft
This stage will not be necessary for all patients, only those with insufficient healthy bone into which we can place the implants. If it is needed, we will perform the bone graft surgery, then you will need to let it heal for six months or longer before we can proceed with the implants.
Implantation
As we go to place the titanium implant in your jaw, you will receive either local anesthetic (in the case of a single tooth replacement) or more extensive anesthesia (for multiple teeth) so that you experience no discomfort at all. The placement of the post is done by making a small cut in the gum where the prosthesis will go, drilling the post into the bone, and stitching the cut closed. This takes up to two hours per tooth.
Implantation recovery
Before moving on, we give your mouth up to six months to heal. During this time, the bone grows around the implant, creating the ultra-stability that dental implants are known for.
You’ll need to take any prescribed antibiotics as directed after your surgery and may wish to take over-the-counter pain relievers, as well. You may have some swelling, bruising, or slight bleeding initially. Eat a diet of soft foods for a few days and brush diligently but carefully so as to avoid disturbing the incision(s). Depending on the level of anesthesia you received and how you feel, you should be able to return to normal activities in a couple days.
Placing the abutment and crown
The abutment is the small piece that screws into the implant and will support a restorative crown (the “tooth” part). After attaching it to the implant, we make an impression of your mouth so that the porcelain crown can be matched perfectly to the size, shape, and the color of your natural teeth. Then, when it’s ready, you come back and we install it. In the interim, we will put a temporary crown over the abutment.
Crown recovery
The recovery time for the final part of the treatment–placing the crowns–is much shorter than the other recovery times. The crowns may be sensitive for a few days, but this should dissipate relatively quickly.
While dental implants are a permanent solution, it doesn’t mean every implant will last forever (although success rates are very high).
Key Benefits of Dental Implant Treatment
1. Improved Appearance: Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth, providing a natural appearance. They become a permanent part of your mouth and help maintain your facial structure and smile.
2. Improved Speech and Comfort: Dental implants function like natural teeth, improving your speech by preventing slippage of the teeth. Additionally, they become part of you, eliminating the discomfort associated with removable dentures.
3. Improved Oral Health: Dental implants don’t require altering nearby teeth, as tooth-supported bridges do. This leaves more of your own teeth intact, improving your long-term oral health. They also help to maintain bone health by providing the same stimulation as natural tooth roots.
4. Durability and Convenience: Dental implants are durable and, with proper care, can last a lifetime. Unlike removable dentures, implants remain in place, providing convenience and a sense of security.
5. High Success Rate: Dental implants have a high success rate and are considered a reliable and effective treatment for tooth replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions about Dental Implants
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots, typically made of titanium, that provide a permanent base for fixed, replacement teeth. They are an effective long-term solution for people who suffer from missing teeth, failing teeth, or chronic dental problems.
Ideal candidates for dental implants should be in good overall health, have healthy gums, and sufficient bone density in their jaws to hold the implant. They should also be committed to maintaining proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits.
The process of getting dental implants involves several stages, which may take a few months. It starts with a consultation, followed by the placement of the titanium implant, which is then allowed to heal and integrate with the bone. Once healed, an abutment is attached to the implant which will hold the new tooth. Finally, a crown is attached to the abutment, giving the appearance of a natural tooth.
The procedure to place dental implants usually involves local anesthesia and is generally not painful during the procedure. Following the surgery, there may be some discomfort. However, most patients report that the pain is less than they expected, and is typically managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
With proper care and maintenance, dental implants can last a lifetime. The crown attached to the implant, however, typically lasts about 10-15 years before it may need replacement due to wear and tear.
Dental implants offer many benefits, including a natural look and feel, improved speech, comfort, durability, and convenience. Unlike dentures, they don't require removal for cleaning and they allow you to eat your favorite foods without hesitation.
Caring for dental implants is similar to caring for your natural teeth. This includes brushing at least twice a day, flossing, using an antibacterial mouthwash, and regular dental check-ups.
